FOOD MANAGEMENT The industrialization of Sweden took place in the late 19th century. The combustion engine and the electricity were two important inventions that enabled a fast and vast industrialization throughout the country. Due to the harbour’s well-established railroad system, a large part of Malmö’s food industries were located in the harbour by the end of the 19th century. A great deal of the mixed cargo that was connected to the management of food groceries was handled in Nyhamnen. As a result, the official butchery of the city, Slagthuset, was built in Nyhamnen in 1904. The purpose of Slagthuset was to facilitate the exporting of meat goods from the harbour. Of similar reasons, the so called Smörkontrollen (”the institution for butter surveiance”) was built in 1935 on Ångbåtsbron. The function of Smörkontrollen was to control the |
